Further milk price rises justified, says UFU
In late June the Ulster Farmers’ Union welcomed a boost in milk prices, but warned that with market signals positive further increases would be justified in the coming months. Now it says it is time for delivery, and is pressing for prices to reflect what is happening on national and global dairy markets.

AFBI report will drive trade debate, says UFU
The Ulster Farmers’ Union says the report from AFBI on the implications of possible policy options for UK trade in food and agricultural products after Brexit is a sound foundation for a much needed debate. It stresses however that the options considered are theoretical, and that the final outcome is unlikely to be as clear cut as the analysis.

Pig producers urged to submit their claims for industry competitiveness scheme
Claims must be made on the Pig Industry Competitiveness Scheme claim form supplied in the Letter of Offer. Each claim must be accompanied by original invoices and bank statements confirming that the invoices have been paid in full. Supplier invoices, or any supplementary information, must detail the amount and total cost of medication purchased.

Uncertainty remains after DfE response to UFUs RHI tariff concerns
The Ulster Farmers’ Union says it is frustrated by the response it has received from the Department for the Economy permanent secretary, Andrew McCormick, in relation to the Union’s concerns around the department’s proposed extension of the temporary revised RHI tariffs. The UFU recently wrote to DfE to express alarm at the proposal.

Ulster Farmers’ Union says that the efforts of government and other agencies to offer practical support and guidance have been gratefully received by farmers affected by the flooding in the North West. The Ulster Farmers’ Union attended a DAERA stakeholder meeting this week for an update on recycled manure solids (RMS) used for cattle bedding. Since 2009 there has been provision within the EU animal by products legislation which enables the use of recycled manure solids as animal bedding to the extent that the operator ensures the control of risks to public and animal health. Research has been conducted on the technology used for this process in Great Britain and farmers there have been able to seek authorisation to recycle manure solids for bedding for some time. Up until now this process has not been approved in Northern Ireland, however from 1st October 2017, local farms will now be able to seek authorisation from DAERA to be permitted to produce RMS for bedding.

NIEA stonewalling on ammonia emissions, says UFU
