The Ulster Farmers’ Union attended a DAERA stakeholder meeting this week for an update on recycled manure solids (RMS) used for cattle bedding.  Since 2009 there has been provision within the EU animal by products legislation which enables the use of recycled manure solids as animal bedding to the extent that the operator ensures the control of risks to public and animal health.  Research has been conducted on the technology used for this process in Great Britain and farmers there have been able to seek authorisation to recycle manure solids for bedding for some time.  Up until now this process has not been approved in Northern Ireland, however from 1st October 2017, local farms will now be able to seek authorisation from DAERA to be permitted to produce RMS for bedding.
